Henry Thompson was born Dec. 23, 1834 in Ross County, Ohio and died Feb. 17, 1920, at Letts, Iowa.

He was the son of John and Sarah Thompson, and came with his parents to Louisa County, Iowa, in 1839, and was united in marriage Jan. 14, 1855 to Mary J. Kauffman. To this union were born eight children, four sons and four daughters. The mother and four children having preceeded him in death. The surviving children are Mrs. Alice K. Lindsey of Los Angeles, Calif., J. C. Thompson of Alhambra, Calif., A. B. Thompson of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, and John A. Thompson of Wapello, Iowa. He also leaves one brother, J. W. Thompson of Drakesville, Iowa, and eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren to mourn his departure.

At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in Company F, 19th Iowa, and served through the entire war and was promoted to the rank of orderly sergeant. He was a kind and indulgent father, he had a sunny and cheerful disposition and was "Uncle Henry" to everybody, and held in high esteem by his friends and neighbors.

For the past several years he has made his home with his neice, Mrs. Clarence Shellabarger at Letts, Iowa, at which place the funeral services were held, conducted by Rev. Phillips of the M. E. Church. For several years Rev. Phillips had been personnally acquainted with the deceased, and paid a warm and glowing tribute to his character and worth. He was laid to rest beside his beloved wife in Thompson Cemetery.

The pallbearers were I. W. Gage, Theo. Hartmen, M. C. Ross, Harve Retter, Walter Ingram and David Gage.
