Sherdie L. Phillips

Sherdie L. Phillips, Sr., 87, of Letts, Iowa, died Thursday, April 10, 2003 at his home. Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Sunday at Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home in Muscatine with the Rev. Sue Harper officiating. Pallbearers were Bob Pogue, David Pogue, Rocky Phillips, Ricky Phillips, Matt Philllips, and Jeff Coder. Honorary bearers were Mike Phillips and Lee Salek. Burial was in the Oakgrove Cemetery. Following interment there was a luncheon at Grange Hall in Cranston.

Visitation was 3-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Phillips was born December 6, 1915 in Leasburg, Mo., the son of H. Sherd and Kizzie Campbell Phillips. He married Wilma V. Galbraith on April 7, 1935 in Blair’s Creek, Mo., and shared their 68th wedding anniversary.

He served proudly in the 90th Infantry during World War II and was awarded five Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5166 in Wapello.

Prior to moving to Iowa in 1952, he drove a truck, farmed, and logged timber in southern Missouri. He farmed with the Cashman Brothers Farms from 1852 until he semi-retired in 1992. Since that time he has engaged in hog farming with his son, Brad.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, playing cards, and listening to the St. Louis Cardinal baseball games.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Sherdie (Buck) Phillips Jr., and wife Sue of Columbus City and Brad Phillips and wife Cathy of Letts; four daughters, Joyce Coder and husband John of Letts, JoAn Pogue and husband Tyman of Ballwin, Mo., Rosemary Salemink and husband Dennis of Des Moines and Robin Phillips of Letts; 21 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherd and Kizzie; one brother, James Phillips; one sister, Clela Thomas; one granddaughter, Jill Coder; one grandson, Joe Phillips; and one great-grandson, Jakie Phillips.
