A death that severely shocked the whole community occurred early Sunday morning, when Bert Lockwood suddenly passed away. He had been a sufferer from asthma and heart trouble for years, but had never considered himself in a serious condition until about three weeks ago. He had accepted an excellent position in Davenport, as a painter, but the work was too much for him and he was compelled to return home. He gradually grew weaker and about one o'clock Sunday morning he passed to his reward. Bert was a kindly fellow with a sunny disposition and a large fund of humor, and was liked by everyone who knew him. He will be greatly missed, not only in the home, but throughout the community.
Bert Ellsworth Lockwood was born March 7, 1874, at Grandview, Iowa, and died June 4, 1916, at Wapello, Iowa, aged 42 years, 2 months and 27 days. He grew to manhood in Louisa county, where he spent the greater portion of his life. Two years he spent in the state of Washington.
On the 24th of June 1898, he enlisted at Davenport, Iowa, and served in Company C, 50th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry in the Spanish-American war, from which company he was honorably discharged at the close of the war.
On December 26, 1906, he was united in marriage to Miss Jessie Clark in Muscatine, Iowa, who, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.S. Lockwood, five brothers Edwin, Guy and George of Raymond, Wash., and Ralph and James, of Muscatine, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. Wm. Hess of St. Paul, Minn.
Funeral services were held from the home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, being in charge of the Masonic lodge of which he was a prominent working member.
