Matthew S. McGrew died Monday evening at his home in Grandview, after a lingering illness extending over a term of two years, aged 71 years.
Death was hastened by several paralytic strokes which he suffered during the past twelve months. He had been an invalid for more than half a year, during which time death had been anticipated.
The deceased was a prominent farmer of Pt. Louisa township for many years before his removal to Grandview a few years ago. He was not only a well-informed man but a good upright citizen who stood high in the community in which he lived.
The deceased was born in Richland county, Ohio, in 1842. In 1851, when a young lad, he came to this county with his parents, and was here reared on a farm, receiving his education in the district schools. At the age of twenty-three years he enlisted in the 184th Ohio Infantry, and served until the close of the war as a private. After his discharge he returned to Louisa county, where he engaged in farming.
In 1866 he was married to Sarah Hurst, a native of the county and a daughter of A. Hurst, one of the early pioneers. Twelve children were born to this union, eight of whom, with the mother, survive: Willis, of Grandview; Charles, of Grandview; Oliver, of Burlington; Clarence, of Montana; Archibald, of Wisconsin; Edward, of Ottumwa; Earle, of Ottumwa, and Miss Catherine, at home.
He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Hester Crow, of South Muscatine, and two others in Ohio and Washington.
The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Methodist church in Grandview.
