M. BENZ IS DEAD

Well Known Citizen Passed Away Yesterday Afternoon

WAS BORN IN GERMANY IN 1831.

Came to This Country When Twenty-Two Years of Age and Settled on a Farm in Washington County - Lived in City Two Years.

Matthias Benz, a widely known and highly respected citizen of Muscatine county, passed away yesterday afternoon at 4:20 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. J. Jeffries, of 1008 Spring street. He was in the seventy-fourth year of his age, having been born in Germany in 1831, and his death was due to ailments due to old age. He came to America when about twenty-two years of age and settled on a farm in Washington county where he lived for about 15 years. He afterwards moved to a farm in Seventy-Six Township and until two years ago made his home there. Two years ago he came to Muscatine and has since made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Jeffries.

On January 12, 1860, he was united in marriage to Miss Lucy Schneider. Mrs. Benz died Dec. 6, 1903. Mr. Benz is survived by five children, four daughters and one son, they being Mrs. H.J. Jeffries, of this city, with whom he made his home; Mrs. J.W. Hintermeister, of this city, and Mrs. O.J. Derby, Mrs. W.F. Nelson and Jacob Benz, of Louisa county. The other son of Mr. Benz, Albert, died on Nov. 11, 1885.

He is also survivec by two brothers, Lorenz Benz, of Washington, Iowa, and William Benz, of Los Angeles, California.
