Dorothy Ann Thomas, 91, of Columbus City died Sunday, March 23, 2003 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction with burial in the Cambrian Cemetery.

Visitation was 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with a 7 p.m. Eastern Star service.

A memorial has been established at the funeral home.

Born September 17, 1911, in rural Columbus Junction, she was the daughter of Hugh and Jeanette Hughes Thomas. She graduated from Cotter High School in 1930.

She was a member of the Cotter Presbyterian Church, serving as elder, clerk of session, treasurer and Sunday School teacher, was a charter member of the Cotter Guild and a a52-year member of the Emma Beckman Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Ms. Thomas was a cook at Cotter School, worked at several restaurants, operated the Maid-Right in Columbus City, and worked at Your Market grocery store. She had a gift for baby sitting and caring for the elderly. She enjoyed sewing, hand quilting, gardening flowers, collecting cups and saucers and thimbles and playing cards. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye basketball fan. Upon the death of her mother and grandmother, she helped raise her brothers, and raised nieces Janet Thomas Pretz and Beverly Thomas Gordon after the death of their mother.

Survivors include her brothers, Elmer Thomas of Columbus Junction and Kenneth Thomas of Iowa City; special nieces, Janet Pretz and husband Bob of Columbus Junction and Beverly Gordon of Rockwell City; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Haydn, Harold, and Harvey and two infant sisters.
