HILLIS G. BROWN

Sneedville, TN – Hillis G. Brown, 86, of Sneedville, Tennessee, and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, May 8, 1996 at the Morristown Hamblen Hospital at Morristown, Tennessee. He was born February 22, 1910 at Morning Sun, Iowa, the son of Hugh L. and Sarah Trask Brown. He graduated from high school at Winfield, Iowa, and attended the old Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa) at Cedar Falls. He was married to Maxine M. Surfus on January 11, 1937 at Osceola, and she died February 10, 1986. He graduated from the Universal Plumbing school in Kansas City, Missouri. He owned and operated H.G. Brown and Associates, plumbing and heating contractors in Oskaloosa for many years. Following his retirement, he lived in Lake Leelaunau, Michigan and Cocoa Beach, Florida, and moved to Sneedville, Tennessee a year ago.

He is survived by a son, Dennis G. Brown of Orlando, Florida and a daughter, Maurita S. Cook of Sneedville, Tennessee; 5 grandchildren, and a sister, Audrene Richard of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Maurice Brown.

The body has been cremated and Memorial Services were held Tuesday, May 14, 1996 at 1:30 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Dr. Fred Richard officiating. Burial was in the Forest Cemetery at Oskaloosa. Visitation with the family was Tuesday, 11:30 a.m. until service time at the funeral chapel. Memorials may be made to the Sneedville (TN) United Methodist Church.
