HILDA E. KEMPER

Hilda Elizabeth Kemper, age 85, of Wapello, died early Saturday morning, March 28, 1992 at St. Francis Continuation Care & Nursing Home Center at Burlington. She was born October 7, 1906 at Springville, Iowa, the daughter of Wilber and Sara Bishop Whitaker. She married Oscar C. Kemper on August 14, 1930 at Des Moines. He died January 24, 1978.

She was a graduate of Springville High School in 1924 and Iowa State Teachers College of Cedar Falls in 1926. She taught in a one room rural school in Linn County near Springville. She then taught 5th and 6th grades in Wapello. She also farmed with her husband for 48 years.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church at Wapello, a Past District Officer of the United Methodist Women, a 3rd grade Sunday School teacher for over 25 years, a volunteer for the Wapello Meals on Wheels, a Savings Bond volunteer during WWII, a Charter member of the Toolesboro Goodwill Club, a Charter member of the Louisa County Retired Teachers Association, a Founder Charter member of the Louisa County Genealogical Society, a Past President of the Louisa County Farm Bureau Women, a member of the Louisa County Historical Society, and a member of the Louisa County Corn Growers Association.

Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn (Mrs. Richard) Augsburger of Mt. Pleasant; a son Warren & Shirley Kemper of Wapello; four grandchildren, Tom Kemper and his wife Melanie of Tama; Judy (Mrs. Kirk) Gerst of Wapello; Scott Augsburger and his wife Lisa of Mt. Pleasant, and Mark Kemper of Wapello; five great-grandchildren, Nikki & Derek Kemper of Tama, Kiley & Sara Gerst of Wapello, and Staci Augsburger of Mt. Pleasant; one sister, Esther MacNeill of Waterloo; a brother-in-law, George Kemper of Sharon, Pennsylvania; and a sister-in-law, Alma Kemper Swank of Wilmington, Delaware. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Oscar; two sisters, Eunice Bentley and Mariam Emerson; and one brother, Bishop Whitaker.

The Funeral Service for Hilda Kemper was held at 10:30 AM on Monday, March 30, 1992 at the United Methodist Church at Wapello, with the Rev. Ed Philgreen officiating. Bev Parsons provided the organ music.

The Honorary Bearers were Marion Schafer, Keith Hiller, Harry Toms, Paul Gustison, Jack Parsons, Bob Schafer and Gary Spitznogle.

The Casket Bearers were Tom Kemper, Mark Kemper, Scott Augsburger, Kirk Gerst, Jack Samuels and Forrest Hunt.

The Flower Attendants were Judy Gerst, Melanie Kemper, Lisa Augsburger, Becky Smith and Kathryn Justice.

Burial followed at the Wapello Cemetery.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefits of the United Methodist Church and the Louisa County Genealogical Society.

The family met with friends Sunday evening at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home.
