NEAL R. KEMP

Neal Raymond Kemp, age 72, of Wapello, Iowa, died early Thursday morning, January 9, 1992 at his home. He was born October 6, 1919 in Louisa County, Iowa, the son of Paul and Marian Stineman Kemp. He married Lila M. Downs on November 3, 1948 at New Orleans, Louisiana.

Mr. Kemp was an Army veteran of WW II having served in the European Theatre. He was recalled from the active reserves in 1948. His service took him to Germany, Korea, Japan, Panama, Puerto Rico, and various locations in the states. He retired as Lt. Col. Neal R. Kemp in 1966 with 26 years of military service.

Following his military retirement Mr. Kemp served as the Justice of the Peace in Wapello and later as Magistrate Judge of Louisa County. He also owned and operated the Western Auto Store in Wapello for several years, and most recently had worked for Tillmann Ford Motors.

He was a 25-year member of the Glenn Allen VFW Post of Wapello, serving as Commander at Military Rites and Master of Ceremonies for Memorial Day Services. He was a member of the 3 Rail Billiard Club at Wapello.

He was of the Methodist Faith.

Survivors include his wife, Lila; two daughters, Kathy Pieper of Oviedo, Florida, and Julie Staats of Washington, Iowa; one son, Paul Kemp of Wapello; nine grandchildren; and one brother, Joe Kemp of Lockridge, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, and infant sister, and an infant brother.

Funeral service for Neal Kemp was held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, January 13, 1992 at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello, with the Rev. Ed Philgreen officiating. Elsie Stephens provided the organ music.

The casket bearers were Wayne Ryan, William L. Matthews, Richard Tillmann, Leslie Fisher, Max Stineman and Bill Gerdes.

The honorary bearers were Col. William Madigan, Retired, Philip Downs, Raymond McCulley and Delno Stineman.

Burial followed at the Wapello Cemetery with military rites by the Honor Guard of Ft. Sheridan, Illinois and the members of the Wapello VFW.

The family met with friends Sunday afternoon at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the Wapello Rescue Unit.
