Edith Mae Blanchard, age 88, a long time resident of the Lutheran Homes in Muscatine and formerly of Wapello, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 27, 1991 at the Lutheran Homes.

She was born Dec. 26, 1902 near Wapello, the daughter of C.A. and Olive Fitzsimmons Blanchard.

She was a graduate of Wapello High School and Drake University. She taught school in rural Louisa County, Columbus City, Mediapolis, and for many years in Keokuk, retiring in 1965. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wapello, the Keokuk Education Association, the Iowa State Education Association, the National Education Association, and the Friendly Neighbors Club of Wapello.

Surviving are three sisters, Bessie Bates, Wapello, Nellie Wilson, Morning Sun, and Dorothy Ringer, Sherman, Ill.; three brothers, Marion Blanchard, Forsythe, Mo., Robert Blanchard, Burlington, and Richard Blanchard, Iowa City; 10 nieces and nephews; 16 great-nieces and nephews; one great-great-niece and one great-great-nephew. she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and one brother.

Funeral service for Edith Blanchard was at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, 1991 at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home with Rev. Merle Melton officiating. Kathleen Hagele provided the organ music. Casket bearers included Orval Schmeiser, Maurice Schmeiser, Delbert Dotson, Warren Wilson, Bob Bates and William L. Matthews. Flower attendants were JoAnn Wehmeyer and Linda Dotson. Burial followed at the Wapello Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the benefits of the Lutheran Homes and the Louisa County Historical Society.
