Edwin Duane Gardner, 66, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Ed was born on March 11, 1942, in Wellman, IA, the second child of Harold and Gayle Gardner. Growing up Ed enjoyed horses, hunting and participating in many types of sports. He received a Bachelors degree in History and Education and a Masters degree in Education from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville MO. Ed also served as a faculty member at NMSU and accomplished post graduate work at the University of Iowa.

Ed and his family were residents of Columbus Junction for 15 years. While residing there, much of Ed’s free time was spent transforming the old Restopia home, restoring the home to its original grandure.

Ed was known as a husband, father, coach/teacher and a friend. Ed enjoyed his children and grandchildren, spending time with them always put a smile on his face. Ed was referred to by many as an easy-going, laid-back man of few words, but his actions made lasting impressions. He taught Physical Education and coached basketball and track at Louisa-Muscatine High School from 1967 to 1980. His career progressed to the business side of the world as a Sales Rep for Diamond Vogel Paint and then Valspar Corporation, as a National Account Manager. Ed finished his career as General Manager at Davis-Frost, a Tulsa, OK, based paint company. He then retired in 2001 due to health reasons.

Ed is survived by his wife of 43 years, Carolyn Gardner, his son, Brett Gardner of Murfreesboro, TN, his daughters, Sherri Eagle of Hills, IA, and Cindy Miller of West Liberty, IA; 6 grandchildren, Jarred, Taylor and Cambrie Gardner, Zane Eagle and Owen and Brody Miller; 3 siblings, Cheryl Karr of Wellman, IA, Becky Johns of Conesville, IA, and Brad Gardner of Wellman. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Gardner and Gayle Gardner of Wellman, IA.

Following a cremation, a “Celebration of Life” ceremony will be held at the American Legion in Columbus Junction, IA on Sunday, March 30, 2008 at 3:00 PM. All family and friends are invited to attend, to take part in the remembrance of Ed’s life. A private family burial will be held at a later date in Wellman, IA.
