Dennis L. Black, age 44, of Mediapolis, Iowa, died in a boating accident on Saturday, June 12, 1999, at Tanecoma Lake at Rockaway Beach, Missouri. The son of Alva and Delores Poggemiller Black, he was born March 25, 1955 at Burlington.

Dennis was a graduate of the Wapello High School in 1974. He was the owner/operator of Black's Custom Molds.

Dennis was an avid boat racer and was a member of the American Outboard Federation and the American Power Boat Association. He had received multiple national championships. Dennis enjoyed his family and friends.

Survivors include his parents, Delores and Alva Black, Jr. of Wapello; two brothers, Rollin Black, of Wapello and Alva (Bill) Black, III of Wapello; his fiance, Lori Warner and her two sons, Ryan and Tanner of Geneseo, Illinois; three nieces and two nephews, Beth Black, Chastine Reynolds and Shawnta Black, and Brett and Aaron Black; uncles, Kenneth Black of Mediapolis, Wilbur Poggemiller, Jr. of Lockhart, Texas and Paul Linder, Wapello; and aunts, Maxine Metzger, Morning Sun, Devona Griffin of Columbus Junction and Juanita Bell of Milton. Dennis and Lori were to be married July 10, 1999, at a boat race in Moline, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, two aunts and two uncles.

The funeral service for Dennis Black will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 17, 1999, at the First United Methodist Church at Mediapolis with the Rev. John Gaulke officiating. John Sharp will share memories. The music will be provided by Joyce Butler as the vocalist singing "Beyond the Sunset" and Korkee Carruthers as the organist.

The casket bearers will include Kenny Hobbs, Randy Smith, Loren Watters, Brett Black, Dave Lakes, and Craig Hoard. The honorary bearers will include Gary Stineman, Homer Schultz, Terry Payn, Brian Payn, Connie Payn, Laura Sholes, Tanner Warner, Ryan Warner, Mike Robertson, and the American Outboard Federation. Burial will follow at the Kossuth Cemetery at Mediapolis.

Visitation was Wednesday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home at Mediapolis where the family met with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

A Memorial Fund has been established.
