Ethyl Lucille Beik, age 89, of Wapello, died Thursday morning, Oct. 5, 2000, at the Great River Medical Center at West Burlington, Iowa. The daughter of Elmer Ellsworth and Martha Mehaffy Caldwell, she was born March 14, 1911, at Mediapolis, Iowa. She married Gerald John Beik on June 19, 1935 at Morning Sun. He died October 13, 1993.

Ethyl graduated from Mediapolis High School in 1929. She attended the Cedar Falls Teacher College and also graduated from the Burlington Beauty Academy in 1933. She taught in various rural schools including Huron School before her marriage.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Delta Alpha Guild at Wapello. She was also a member of the Friendly Neighbors Club, the Pine Grove Club, and the Louisa County Historical Society. She and her husband had enjoyed camping. She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles, embroidering, and caring for flowers.

Survivors include her daughter, Doris and Dale Harris, of Grinnell, Iowa; a son Dale and Judy Beik of Wapello; three grandchildren; one step-grandchild; one great-grandchild; one great-granddaughter; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters, and one brother.

The funeral ceremony for Ethyl Beik was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 8, 2000, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello with the Rev. Mary N. Pugh officiating. Betty McChesney provided the organ music. The casket bearers included Bill Small, Jack Reif, Maurice Schmeiser, Harlan Hayes, Kenneth McChesney and Albert Walton. Honorary bearers were Keith Olson, Ronald Cross and Floyd Reif. Burial followed at the Wapello cemetery.

Visitation was Saturday at the funeral home where the family met with friends in the evening.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the First Presbyterian Church at Wapello and the Wapello Community Ambulance Service.
