Elsie Mae Baxter, 98, formerly of Oakville, died Saturday, March 19, 1988 at the Wapello Nursing and Care Center.

Born Oct. 29, 1889 in Mediapolis, she was the daughter of William and Mary Peck Loper. She married James Baxter Aug. 28, 1906 in Mediapolis. He died August 11, 1957.

She was a cook at the Oakville School for 19 years and operated a cafe with her husband in Oakville for many years. She was a member of the Oakville United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughers, Velma Reeb, Las Vegas, Neb., and Alfrieda Carter, Burlington; two sisters, Wilma Swafford and Lora Walker, both of Burlington; five grandchildren; 11 great-granchildren; and four step-great-granchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter Alberta Cook, grandson Wayne Reeb, her parents, 3 brothers and a sister.

Visitation was held Monday evening at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home. A memorial has been established for the Oakville United Methodist Church.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Oakville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harold Werele officiating. Flowers were cared for by vigina Swafford and Sherry Wolfe. Organ and vocal music by Gary Walker.

Pallbearers were Warren Cook, Wayne Johnson, John Davis, Leland Swafford, Randy Schultz and Bob Schultz.

Burial was in Edwards Cemetery.
