TELL DETAILS OF DURRETT DEATH
FLIGHT OFFICER DIES IN COLLISION

When Flight Officer Stanley E. Durrett met death in the skies over Germany, September 22, it was because another ship in his formation apparently out of control, collided with Durrett's Flying Fortress.

Durrett's ship immediately burst into flames and disappeared in the clouds. Seven parachutes were seen to open from the other plane.

The story was written to Mrs. Freda E. Durrett, 1611 Remey avenue, widow of the flyer, by two lieutenants who flew on the mission and by the English grandparents of the navigator of Durrett's ship. The navigator also was killed.

Durrett was flying the B-17 and the formation in which he was flying was over its objective and ready to unload bombs, when the accident occurred, Mrs. Durrett was informed.

The grandparents of the dead navigator wrote Mrs. Durrett that they were able to obtain the information as they live within a 15-minute cycle ride of the flyer's base.

Durrett, whose death in action had been announced previously was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Durrett, former residents of Morning Sun. The flyer held the air medal and an oak leaf cluster and had completed thirty-five missions over enemy territory. In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by a three year old daughter, Priscilla Marlene, and two brothers, Jack and Henry, in overseas service.
