Verna Rhue Baird 76, formerly of Burlington, died Thursday morning, January 27, 2005, at the Lutheran Homes at Muscatine.

She was born May 20, 1928, in Wapello, she was the daughter of Verne and Harriet Pangborn Thomas. On April 28, 1946, she married Malcolm E. Baird in Cairo. He preceded her in death on September 18, 1996.

She graduated from Wapello High School in 1945. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Burlington, The Prebyterian Women and, for many years, the Explorer Mariners. She also was a member of P.E.O. Chapter NI of Burlington and the Burlington Women's club. She enjoyed reading; playing games, especially bridge; and traveling.

She is survived by four daughters, Candy Stineman of Winfield, Phyllis Baird of Denver, Becky Wear of Burlington and Jennifer Reynolds of Davenport; one son, Kevin Baird of Denver; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Hazel Storm of Pittsburg, Kan., Janet Aldrich of Cedar Rapids, and Judy Bunney of Marion.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers, Glen and Lyle.

The funeral for her was held on Monday, January 31, 2005 at the First Prebyterian Church in Burlington. The Rev. Forrest Krummel officiated. Burial was in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlibngton.

A memorial has been established for the First Presbyterian Church and the Alzheimer's Association.

Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis was in charge of arrangements.
