Wesley SMITH Sr., 86, dies after extended illness
Wesley H. SMITH Sr., 86, Columbus Junction, passed away at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City on Monday, January 29, 1985, after an extended illness.
Services for Mr. Smith will be held at the United Methodist Church in Columbus Junction on Thursday, January 31, at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Richard Faris will be in charge of the services and a nephew, Rev. LaVerne HUBBARD, will assist.
Music will be provided by Mrs. Jerry Gerot. Mr. and Mrs. Brian Cummings will sing. Flower attendants are Mrs. Robert Harris, Mrs. Paul Crossley Jr., Mrs. Arlene Solomon. Honorary casket bearers are Paul Grouwinkel, Lloyd Clark, Paul Howell, Robert Hedemann, Denley Ganfield, Neal SMITH and George Liebbe. Casket bearers are Arvid Morgan, Dan Wilson, Woodrow Shearer, Robert Harris, Raymond Kottkamp and Bolen Berry.
Interment will be in the Columbus City Cemetery.
Wesley Henry SMITH, Sr. was born October 13, 1898, at Nichols, the son of Henry and Ida WIKER-SMITH. He married Flossie HUBBARD on October 28, 1922, who survives. He is also survived by a son Wesley Jr. of rual Columbus Junction, and two daughter, Mrs. Russell (Delores) LAMP of rual Letts, and Mrs. Gerald (Beverly) MURRY of rual Columbus Junction, eleven grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren, two sisters Nina DUBISHER of West Liberty and Bernice TOBIN of Washington. he was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
Mr. SMITH retired from farming in 1962. He was an active member of the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church, the Methodist Men's Group; past president of the Columbus Junction Senior Citizens, and instrumental in organizing the Congregate Meal Site program at Columbus Junction.
Wesley was a former Union Township Assessor, served in the Older Iowa Legislature, and in 1979 was named Outstanding Older Iowan. In October of 1984, he was named Outstanding Senior Citizen of Columbus Junction.
A memorial has been established.
Visitation will begin at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction at noon on Wednesday.
