Allen Russell Winder 1919 - 2005

WINDER, MURRAY, HURST, SCHRADER, PLATTENBERGER, COTTER, MCELHINNEY

Mr. Allen Russell Winder of Lithonia, Ga. passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 23, 2005 at Tucker Nursing Center in Tucker, Ga. after an extended illness. Allen was born in Wapello, IA. on July 16, 1919 to Homer Howard Winder and Lula Ann (Murray) Winder. He always considered Wapello his home and had a great love for Louisa County. Allen was a 1939 graduate of Wapello High School and went on to attend Drake University in Des Moines before being drafted into service in WWII where he served in the United States Army in Honolulu, HI. in the Army Corp. of Engineers. He received a distinguished Good Conduct medal and earned a special citation as a Rifle Marksman. He received an Honorable Discharge with the rank of Master Sergeant on January 29, 1946. While serving as a U. S. Army Administrative Instructor at the Savanna Ordinance Depot in Savanna, IL, he met his beloved soul mate, Maryellen Blenner. Al and Maryellen were married on October 27, 1946 in Savanna, IL., and enjoyed over 58 years together.
Allen leaves behind his devoted wife, Maryellen of Lithonia, GA; his son and his wife Craig and Dianna Winder of Davenport, IA.; his daughter Maryanne Winder of Lithonia, GA.; grandchildren Julie Hurst and Jeffrey Winder, both of Phoenix AZ.; his twin great-grandchildren Caitlin and Christopher Winder of Phoenix, AZ; and his nieces Jane Ann Schrader of Greeley, Co and Shirley Plattenberger of Itasca, IL. He will now join the other members of his family who preceded him in death, his parents Homer and Lula Winder, his sisters Florence Cotter and Murray McElhinney and his brother Howard Winder.
Allen and his family became members of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Atlanta in 1972 after his family relocated to Georgia.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, May 10, 2005 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wapello, officiated by Rev. Chris Hinkle. Arrangements are being made by the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello. A private internment will follow at Wapello Cemetery. Wages and Son’s Funeral Home in Stone Mountain, Ga. carried out Allen’s wishes for cremation.
Allen is going home.

Herb Schrader will be the urn bearer. Honorary bearers will include William Plattenberger, Dave Hook, Melvin Lester, Robert Seitzberg, Kenneth Snyder, and Albert Deltondo.
