Gaylord Dixon Elliott, age 82, of Wapello, Iowa, died Friday morning, April 28, 2006, at the Great River Medical Center at West Burlington, Iowa. The son of Merlin and Hazel Binegar Elliott, he was born June 21, 1923 at Linnville, Iowa. He married Rosemary Beachy on May 23, 1953 at Wellman, Iowa.

Gaylord graduated from Grinnell High School in 1940 and was a graduate of Iowa State University. He served in the US Army in WW II and was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and was held as a POW at Bad Orb, Germany.

Gaylord worked with the ISU Extension Service for about 35 years and as the Louisa County Extension Director for most of those years.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church at Wapello, the VFW Glenn Allen Post 5166 of Wapello, the National and Iowa Ex POW, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Moose Lodge of Burlington, and the former Wapello Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed the community, his coffee friends, helping others, riding about town on his 'Harley', and traveling.

He is survived by his wife, Rosemary; his son, Scott & Leslie Elliott of Naperville, Illinois; and two granddaughters, Taylor and Kaitlyn. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Reuel Elliott.

The funeral ceremony for Gaylord Elliott will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, May 1, 2006, at the United Methodist Church at Wapello, with Rev. Sue-Ellen Sherman officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will follow at the Wapello Cemetery with military rites by the Wapello VFW Glenn Allen Post 5166.

The family will meet friends from 3:00 to 5:00 PM on Sunday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefits of the Wapello VFW and the Wapello Rescue Unit.

Music was provided by Bev Parsons as the organist and Alana Poage as vocalist.
