Nellie Verlee Buffington, age 86, of Wapello, Iowa, died Monday morning, August 9, 2004, at the Great River Medical Center at West Burlington, Iowa. The daughter of Edward H. and Minnie Williamson Eversmeyer, she was born January 21, 1918 at Wapello. She married Norman Rexford 'Rex' Buffington on February 16, 1938 at Washington, Iowa. He preceded her in death on March 27, 1984.

Nellie graduated from Wapello High School in 1935. She worked as a cashier at the Corner Grocery and at the Economart both at Wapello, retiring in 1985. She was a school bus driver for 33 years at Wapello.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Delta Alpha at Wapello. She enjoyed sewing and socializing with her Nimble Fingers Sewing Club. She had volunteered for many years with the Department of Human Services of Louisa County and had also been on the Food Pantry Board. She enjoyed embroidering and gardening and most important for her was to enjoy her family including attending the many sports activities of her grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons, Marvin & Peachie Buffington of Sperry and Loren & JoAnn Buffington of Rockford, Illinois; two daughters, Cheryl & Robert Curtis of Columbus Junction and Marlene Belzer and Gary W. Brown of Mediapolis; six grandchildren, including Leslie & Joni Boling of West Burlington, a grandson that she raised; seven great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; several step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Rex; a daughter Leota Boling; and four brothers, Cecil Eversmeyer, Earl Eversmeyer, Herbert Eversmeyer, and Delbert Eversmeyer.

The funeral ceremony for Nellie Buffington will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, August 12, 2004, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home at Wapello, with Rev. Mary N. Pugh officiating. Burial will follow at the Harrison Cemetery, Wapello.

Friends may call from noon to 8:00 PM on Wednesday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 6:30 to 8:00 PM.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the American Cancer Society, the First Presbyterian Church, and the Wapello Food Pantry.
Organ music was provided by Gladys Davis. Anita Odle was the vocalist singing 'How Great Thou Art' and 'In The Garden'.
The casket bearers included Donald Eversmeyer, Roger Davis, Pete Hall, Gary Buffington, Tony Buffington, and Alan Eversmeyer. Honorary bearers were Dale Eversmeyer, Philip Buffington, Robert Buffington, Brian Buffington, Eric Belzer, Jeff Boling, Jon Proud, Donnie Cuppini, Mick Woodruff, and Steve Paris. Flower attendants were Laurie Breon and Joy Crossett.
