Auto Rolls, Runs Over 3-year-old

Police have learned that 3-year-old Muscatine boy was injured Friday when he was run over by an unattended car rolling down the driveway of his home.

Robert Matthews, 3, the son of Dennis Matthews, 608 E. 10th St., was playing in his father’s car with two brothers, Raymond, 4, and Randy, 2, when the car’s transmission was put into neutral, according to a police report.

Robert fell out of the car as it rolled down the driveway, and was run over as his father and Bill Smith, a neighbor, tried to stop the car from behind.

Robert was taken to Muscatine General Hospital by his father, who was sitting on the front porch of his home with Smith when the accident occurred.

The two other Matthews boys were not hurt.

Robert, who suffered a broken pelvis and three broken ribs, was released after spending the weekend in the hospital.

Police were notified of the accident on Tuesday.
