MORIARITY

My great-grandparents, Peter Moriarity and Sarah Ann Osburn Moriarity, are on the U.S. Census in 1850 and 1860, with their ever enlarging number of children, living in Marian Township, Linn County. The 1870 census just lists the children, with the older daughter adding 10 years to her age and all the children using their middle names. I'm wondering if the parents died and the kids were trying to take care of each other and stay together. Was there an epidemic in Linn county in the 1860's? There is a new younger sister on the 1870 census; perhaps mom died in childbirth and dad took off? Was there a Catholic church in the area at that time? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been unable to locate any death or burial records for them.
