Family deaths in 1854

It looks as if several of my family died on or about the same period in Linn County, Iowa in 1854. I am wondering if there was a plague of some kind at the time, possibly small pox or the like?

Mary Sinclair Hunnicutt died 24 Apr 1854, age 54.
Her son, Robert H. Hunnicutt died 5 days later on 01 May 1854 age 20.
Mary Parkins Hunnicutt, a daughter-in-law, died between 1853, when her son was born, and 1855 when her husband, James Sinclair Hunnicutt, remarried. I'm trying to find out if she also died at this period.
