A young Cedar Rapids woman was killed in a one-vehicle accident east of Lisbon early Thursday morning, Nov. 27. Kathy Clausen, 23, Cedar Rapids, suffered massive head and chest injuries and was dead on arrival at Mercy hospital in Cedar Rapids. A passenger in her car, Mark Barger, 23, Cedar Rapids, was taken to Mercy with a minor cut.

The accident occurred at about 5:45 a.m., when Clausen lost control of the 1978 Toyota she was driving east on U.S. 30. Clausen and Barger were on their way to Chicago, when the car started to slide on icy pavement east of Lisbon.

The vehicle went into the north ditch, just inside the Cedar county line, and then the right front of the car struck the ditch. Clausen was thrown from the vehicle, and it rolled twice. Barger was not thrown from the car.

The Toyota landed on its top in the yard of Loren Stewart, rural Lisbon. The accident was investigated by Dan Hannes, Cedar county deputy sheriff.

Funeral services for Kathy Clausen were held Monday at the George L. Gay Funeral home in Iowa City. Burial was in the Memorial Gardens cemetery.

Clausen was born Sept. 2, 1957 in Iowa City to Gordon and Marjorie Lindley Clausen. She graduated from City High in Iowa City in 1976 and was a student at Kirkwood Community College. She was also employed as a custodian for the Cedar Rapids school district.

She is survived by her mother, Marjorie (Mrs. Leonard) Adams, Coralville; her father, Gordon Clausen, Cedar Rapids; 4 sisters, Georgina (Mrs. Clyde) Chapman, Lytton; Phyllis (Mrs. Coleman) Williams, Madill, OK; Christina (Mrs. Steve) Spears, Glendale, CA and Terri (Mrs. Dale) See, Aurora, CO and a brother, Gary, Elgin, IL.
