Last rites for Phillip Maurer, 24, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Maurer, were held at Cedar Rapids Dec. 28 with burial in Hala cemetery near Walford.

Mr. Maurer died at his home in Cedar Rapids Dec. 25. The death was ruled a suicide by the Linn county medical examiner. Mr. Maurer was a patient at Veterans hospital, Iowa City, and was spending the Christmas holiday with his mother.

Born at Eglin Air Force base, Fla., June 29, 1949, he had lived in Cedar Rapids most of his life. He served with the army for 3 years.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Helen Maurer, Cedar Rapids; his father, William, in Japan; a sister, Mrs. Terri McDonald and a brother, Jim, both of Cedar Rapids, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Maurer, Tipton and Mrs. Caroline Hieak, Fairfax.
