John A. Pilkington (1936-2022)

John Arden Pilkington, 86, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Sept. 12, 2022, at Heritage Rehabilitation Center from complications of Parkinson’s disease and Dementia. Private family services will be held. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family.

John is survived by his wife, Mary, of 58 years; daughter, Catherine Pilkington; brother, Jim Pilkington; niece, Laura Cummings and her family; nephews, Larry Pilkington, John Pilkington and Steve Pilkington and their families.

John was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Duain Pilkington.

John was born on Feb. 7, 1936, the son of John and Pauline Jones Pilkington in Blackwell, Okla. He graduated from the School of Cytology at USC. On July 23, 1964, he married Mary Catherine Massey in Vista, Calif., at All Saints Episcopal Church. John worked as a cytologist at St. Luke’s laboratory for 25 years, retiring in 2016 at the age of 80.

John was a man of many interests and talents. He enjoyed showing dogs

and breeding Dobermans and Toy Poodles. John was an excellent cook and baker and delighted in making meals for his family. He was intrigued about history and other cultures, and you could always find a book in his hand. John was involved with his daughter’s Girl Scout Troop and was a member of the Doberman Pinchers Club of San Diego for many years. John never knew a stranger and liked making friends wherever he went. Most importantly, he loved spending time with his family.

John’s family would like to thank Heritage Rehab Facility and their hospice care team for taking such good care of him.

Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. George Orthodox Church.
