Sharon Ruth Tawney, 73 of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, May 30, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a brain aneurysm. Services: 10:30 a.m., Friday, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church by Rev. Gary Mayer. Burial: Rock Island National Cemetery. A Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. on Thursday with a Vigil Service to follow at Teahen Funeral Home. Those not attending the rosary or vigil service may visit with the family from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday and after 9:30 a.m. on Friday at the church.
Sharon is survived by her husband of 53 years Carl; three children, Lori (Don) Johnson of Martinsburg, WV, Russ (Stacey) Tawney of Cedar Rapids and Matt Tawney of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; six grandchildren, Cassie (Tyler) Semler, Ellie (Molly) Johnson, Nick (Ashton) Johnson, Aidan, Jackson and Jonas Tawney; three great-grandchildren, Rosie, Ginny and Lia; and sister, Pat Casazza.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents.
Sharon was born on March 11, 1949 in Champaign, IL the daughter of Herbert and Elsie Manning Ragel. She married Carl Tawney on October 19, 1968 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Champaign, IL. Sharon worked at Duane Arnold Energy Plant for many years before becoming a massage therapist. She was an active member of St. Jude Catholic Church, St. John XXIII Catholic Church and most recently St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Sharon and Carl would take communion to those who were homebound.
Sharon was a talented quilter, and shared the outputs of her love of gardening, cooking, and baking with her friends. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and always had music playing through the home. ‘Nana’ to her grandchildren, Sharon enjoyed every second she could with them; never missing an opportunity to cheer them on.
