Max Dean Todd (1928-2022)

Max Dean Todd, 93, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa passed away peacefully on Monday, January 31, 2022. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 29, 2022, at 11:00 AM with a visitation one hour prior at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Inurnment will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery- Chapel Garden.

Max was born on March 19, 1928, in Toddville, Iowa to Leland and Pearl (Boquist) Todd. He was an only child and graduated from Franklin High School in Cedar Rapids, IA. He married the love of his life, Ellen M. Burke on October 23, 1949, in Vinton, Iowa; they celebrated 72 years of marriage together.

Max was a Master Mason for many years. He was a member of Crescent Lodge #25 and the Scottish Rite in Cedar Rapids, IA. During World War II, he served with the Civil Air Patrol in Linn County, IA. In 1991, after nearly 50 years of service, Max retired as Plant Manager from Iowa Manufacturing, Inc. and was retained there as a consultant for several years. In the 1950s, he helped his life-long friend, William L. McFann, open and operate Bill’s Welding (Lindsey Enterprises).

Max’s life revolved around his family. He was thoughtful, caring, and a loving husband, father and (great) grandfather. He adored his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, teaching them to bowl, play billiards, the piano, hunt, and how to use tools. Max was often found helping family, friends, and neighbors in times of need, whether assisting with projects, clearing yards after storms, or sandbagging during floods. With family and friends, Max enjoyed boating, fishing, and water skiing at Coralville Reservoir and on the Mississippi River.

Max and Ellen traveled to Japan, Mexico, Canada, and Nova Scotia. They went on cruises, visited family and friends across the US, and for many years after retirement, travelled the country by motorhome.

Max is survived by his loving wife Ellen Todd of Robins, IA; daughter Diane Todd of Sugar Land, TX; son Michael and wife Diane (Sweeney) Todd of Cedar Rapids, IA; granddaughter Laurie (Lawrence) and husband Dan Laury of Sugar Land, TX; grandson Matthew and wife Sarah (Leverington) Todd of Kenosha, WI; granddaughter Erica Sweeney of Iowa City, IA; great-grandchildren Kaitlyn and Dylan Pyle and Patrick and Lillian Laury of Sugar Land, TX.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his grandson, David Lawrence.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital or your favorite charity in Max’s name.
