Marion Sentinel Thursday April 12, 1934
Funeral services were held Tuesday from the family home, six miles north of Marion, for Joseph H. Zachary, Sr., ?? a Linn county resident who passed away Sunday.
Mr. Josef H. Zachary, one of the eight children of Josef P. and Tressia Zachary, was born in Belgium, Dec. 19, 1850. He died at his home near Alburnett, Iowa, April 8, 1934, aged 83 years, 3 months and 17 days. At the age of two years he came with his mother to this country to join with the father who had come on ahead and had settled in Dubuque county in Iowa.
In 1875 he was united in marriage to Miss Martha J. Gorton, formerly of Rock Island county, Ill. Two children were born to them, the younger dying in infancy. Mr. Zachary was a farmer by trade. He loved the soil land early learned the art of producing abundant harvests. He was a diligent business man, and continued to apply himself until the age of 81 at which time a stroke rendered him partially helpless and after that time he was much confined to hi wheel chair. He was a great reader, and fortunately for him his eyesight was spared to him until the very end of life and the contents of many a newspaper and book and magazine found their way to his every active brain which remained clear almost until the last. He was of a happy disposition, a great lover of his home, his family, his neighbors and his friends. He was a member of the Methodist church at Wesley chapel, having joined there with his wife soon after their marriage. He was a firm believer in God and in hearty accord with the teachings of His holy word.
About the first of March his failing strength made it necessary for him to abandon his wheel chair and to find what comfort he could in his bed until death came to set him free.
He is survived by an only sister, resident in Marion, Iowa, his wife, Mrs. Martha Zachary, Alburnett; a son, Will, of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren, Howard Delbert Zachary of Cedar Rapids, and Edna Merl Zachary Maurer, of Cedar Rapids; two great-grandchildren Dorothy and Donald, and a host of loving friends and neighbors.
The funeral was conducted at the home of the Rev. J. Bruce Eyestone, pastor of the Methodist church of Alburnett, on Tuesday, April 10, at 2 o'clock. The interment was in the Marion cemetery.
