OBITUARY
U.S. Veteran
William “Bill” Jon Mau, LCSO Sgt. #106, 79, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, February 20, 2021 at Rosemount Steeple Center, Rosemount, MN. Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at Teahen Funeral Home by Pastor Bonnie Koeppen. Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday at Teahen Funeral Home from 2 to 7 pm. Burial: Cedar Memorial Cemetery. All in attendance are required to wear a mask and practice social distancing.
Bill is survived by his son, Richard (Tonya) Morehouse of Spring, TX and their children, London (Kellie) of Brandon, Scout (Tess Wilner) of Cedar Rapids and Sam Morehouse of Spring, TX; daughter, Sara (Joseph) Freese and their children, Skyler and Gavin Freese all of Rosemount, MN; cousin, Shirley Williams of Cedar Rapids; brother in law, Ken Lee of Shenandoah; sister in law Linda Elliott of Iowa City; nephews Chad Lee and family of Adel, Brian Lee and family of Ankeny, Mark Lee and family of West Des Moines and Brian Elliott and family of Iowa City and niece Angie Moore and family of Iowa City.
He was preceded in death by his wife, DorRene in 2016, parents Chet and Margaret, sister, Marylin, in laws Harry and Doris Elliott, and brother in law Edward Elliott.
William was born on May 6, 1941 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Chester and Margaret Nyere Mau. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1959 and attended Kirkwood Community College. Bill served in the United States Army during the Cold War from 1964 to1966 in Company B, 1st Battalion, 66th Armored 2nd Armed Division; also known as the Hell on Wheels Division. Bill also served in the Army Reserves from 1966-1970 and parted with an honorable discharge as a Sergeant.
On June 17, 1977, he married Doris Irene Elliott in Cedar Rapids. Bill worked as a Linn County Deputy Sheriff for 39 years, retiring in 2006. Previous to his work as a Deputy Sherriff he also worked as the Town Marshall in Lisbon and for Collins Radio. During his time with the Linn County Sheriff’s Department he was also an aviation observer with the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
Bill was very accomplished and belonged to many associations throughout his life. He was the Chairman for the Linn County Civil Defense Agency, the Chairman for Iowa State Law Enforcement Assistance Technical Advisory Committee (LEATAC), and was the Chairman twice for the Linn County Firefighters Association. He was a distinguished member of the Metro Communications for Linn County, the Associated Public Safety Communications Officers, and the National Sheriffs Association. Bill also helped coordinate the 911 and e911 system for the residents of Linn County. He served on the Civil Air Patrol Squadron for Cedar Rapids Emergency Services, the Duane Arnold Energy Center Disaster Operations Planning and Logistics Committee, and the Linn County Search and Rescue Operations Team.
While accomplishing so much, Bill was also able to teach for the Reserve Law Officers Association, volunteer for the Linn County Emergency Management, and also drove for the Benton Linn Area Ambulance Service.
Bill received the Linn County Lumir Dostal Public Service Award as well as the Linn County Emergency Management Agency Distinguished Public Service Award in 2006. He also had the honor of receiving the Iowa Governor’s Award for Disaster Services.
Bill was a family man that enjoyed being part of his children’s and grandchildren’s lives. He was an avid Band Booster Club member and a proud band parent. He took part in the Camp Fire Boys and Girls Building and Property Committee as well as being a judge for the Pine Derby Event. Bill was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church and acted as a board member for Metro Credit Union; he was also a proud member of the American Legion and was able to tour NORAD bunker in Cheyenne Mountains Complex.
