Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette October 21, 1911
Matthias Krause passed from his earthly to his heavenly home on the evening of Oct. 16, 1911, in his ninety-first year. Mr. Krause was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, Dec. 15, 1820, but spent the most of his young manhood years in the city of Berlin, where he learned his trade, that of machinist, after which he traveled quite extensively through Germany as is the custom of that country, of all who earn a trade or profession.
In 1849 he was married to Sophie Marie Ehda of Heidelburg, Germany, and in the early fifties they came to America, first settling in Pennsylvania, where they lived about two years. Then coming to Linn county, Iowa, he purchased the farm in Monroe township, on which he resided continuously until about fourteen years ago, when he sold the farm to his son, Charles, and built his present home in Toddville, wishing to spend his remaining years in quiet and well-earned rest.
Mr. Krause was a man of sterling qualities and high ideals, a great reader of the Bible, a firm believer in its teachings and almost a life-long member of the Lutheran church. He was kind-hearted, honorable and upright in all his dealings, to a marked degree.
He leaves to mourn his loss five children, two daughters and three sons, Mrs. Earl Granger of Marion; Anna in the home; Charles, Henry and Frank, all residing on their farms in the immediate neighborhood. Three children, two daughters and one son, preceded their father to the spirit world, and his beloved wife only ten weeks ago.
His work on earth is done and well done, and we believe he has heard God's "well done," and passed through the gates into the city where "there shall be no more pain, neither sorrow nor crying, for the former things shall have passed away."
Mr. Krause was in failing health for several years but the end came peacefully, quietly and his passing was as that of a little child going to its sleep. The funeral services were held at the Toddville Christian church, conducted by Rev. Lair of the Free Methodist church of Toddville. Interment was in the Dunkard cemetery.
