Samuel C. Burkett, one of Linn counties veterans and respected citizens was called to his reward Friday night, April 12th, 1895. He was born in Pennsylvania, Franklin County, Sept. 13th, 1824, was married to Sarah Spindler of Fort county, Pennsylvania, December 17th, 1868. He was of the 73rd col. Infantry of Illinois and gave three years good services to his country. He was a man of good temperate habits, quiet and reserved in the home, true and honest in his dealings with men, and highly respected by all who knew him. He was aged 70 years, 6 months and 29 days. From a family of eleven children, only six survive him, one brother residing in Illinois, one in Van Buren county, Iowa, a brother and sister in Pennsylvania and Mrs. William Palmer and Mrs. Susan Secrist of this county. He leaves a widow and two children, Miss Ella May and William S., both of whom are at home. The funeral services were held at the home in Marion twp., on Monday morning, April 15th, conducted by Rev. N.A. Mershon of Kenwood park, and the body laid to rest at the old Dunkard cemetery northwest of Marion. The services were largely attended.
