Marion Register February 27, 1895
James Woodwell Freeman, the pioneer merchant of Springville was born September 15th, 1820, in Madison County, Kentucky.
He was the son of Nathaniel and Nancy Bergen Freeman. Nathaniel Freeman was a rich Kentucky planter. He died when James was fourteen years of age. Nancy Bergen was a descendent of one of the oldest and best families in Virginia. She lived to old age and died at the home of the subject of this sketch. Mr. Freeman removed from Kentucky to Indiana with his wife and one child in the year 1840 and from thence to Iowa in 1848. His wife died in 1852 and he married Jerusha Jones in 1853, who remains to mourn his loss. By this union five children were born, one son, Anson, who died three years ago last month, and four daughters.
His mercantile career began in the spring of 1861 in Springville, Iowa, in the building now used for a tub factory. His business rapidly increasing he soon erected a two story brick on main street in which place he continued to do business until his death which occurred, February, 20th, 1895.
