Ted Miller Rodgers Sr., 92, passed away peacefully at St. Luke's Hospice on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2020, as a result of COVID-19.
Ted was born Nov. 10, 1928, in Frankfort, Ky., to Charles E. and Teenie Quire Rodgers. He married Retha (Reba) Wash on Oct. 19, 1954. They were married 64 years and had three children, Brenda J. Taylor of Peoria, Ill., Linda G. Wallace of Lisbon, Iowa, and Ted Miller Jr. of Cedar Rapids. Reba preceded Ted in death on Dec. 21, 2018.
Ted served 23 years in the Air Force as an air craft mechanic for B-52 Bombers. He served during the Korean War and served two tours in Vietnam, retiring as master sargent in 1973. He then worked for Kentucky Fried Chicken, retiring after 16 years. After retiring, he worked part-time at the Center Point Road Ace Hardware into his early 80s. He then worked at the starter shack at Squaw Creek/Gardener Golf Course into his late 80s.
Ted loved the game of golf. He won the Cedar Rapids Senior Tournament seven years. He last played golf this fall, played 18 holes and shot a 78. Ted was proud that he was still able to shoot under his age.
Ted was a member of the Marion American Legion, Post 298, and served at ceremonies at veteran funerals and at Marion school's football games.
He is survived by grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, Daniel, Grace, Jayson, Cody and Alyssa; 13 great-grandchildren, and one due in January; and one great-great-grandchild.
Ted was preceded in death by all eight of his siblings.
Graveside services with military rites will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, at Cedar Memorial, 4200 First Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
