James Matthew Macek, 76, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2020, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House. Funeral Mass for Jim will be held at St. Ludmila's Catholic Church, with Fr. Ken Glaser presiding. Burial will be in Czech National Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St., SW. The family requests that everyone attending to wear a mask and practice social distancing.
James was born Feb. 20, 1944, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Matt and Mary (Jindrich) Macek. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School, Class of 1962. Following, Jim attended and earned an Industrial Engineering Degree from the University of Iowa, in 1967. Jim was united in marriage to Nancy Moore on Dec. 26, 1970, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Omaha, Neb. Jim worked at Fisher Controls from 1967-73, and later joined his father at Reliable Machine. He was dedicated to his profession and was very active in the operations to this day. Jim was a longtime member of St. Ludmila's Catholic Church, where he was involved with the Kolache Festival, served on the church council. In addition, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus 5677, and serving on the board for the Cedar Rapids Prairie School Foundation.
Jim is survived by his wife, Nancy; children, Brian (Kelly) Macek of Marion and Katherine (Chris) Rix of Elk Grove, Calif.; four grandchildren, Ava, Annabelle, Lilly and Connor; his sister, Selma (Ray) Scheetz of Cedar Rapids; nephews, Raphael (Anna) Scheetz and Kurt Scheetz; and nieces, Sybil Scheetz, Jamie (Darrell) Golden-Reeves and Jessica Browne.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother and father-in-law, Prudence and Gerald Moore; and a sister-in-law, Pat Kinsell.
Memorials may be directed to either St. Ludmila's Catholic Church, Hospice of Mercy or to the donor's choice of charity.
