Jason Norr North, age 74, for many years a resident here, died Thursday at 12:10 p.m. following an illness of two years. The son of Loyal and Ruth Ann North, he was born at Shellsburg, March 31, 1853. Of a family of six, only Luman North formerly editor of the Springville New Era, now of Hood River, Ore., survives. "Cap" North as he was popularly called, received his education in Shellsburg and came to Marion when he was about 18 years old. For several years he was employed in the Winsor wagon shop, but for about thirty years preceding his illness he was employed at sash and door factories in Cedar Rapids as a stair builder. He was married Dec. 21, 1875, to Belle N. Murray by the Rev. Alexander Marshall, pastor of the Presbyterian church of Marion. There married life was spent in Marion, where for half a century they made their home in the same house. Two children, Harry Carlton and George L., were born to this union.
In early manhood, Mr. North joined the Congregational church, where he taught a class of boys, sang in the choir, and was president of the Young Peoples society for many years.
He was past master of Marion Lodge No. 6, AF & AM, past high priest of Marion chapter, No. 10, R.A.M., past eminent commander of Commandery No. 27 Knights Templar, past patron of Marion Chapter, No. 183, O.E.S., was a member of El Kahir temple, Mystic Shrine past president of the Fraternal Aid Union of Lawrence, Kan. and was a member of the Knights of Pythias and I.O.O.F.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Harry C. of Eldora.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Congregational church with the Rev. Harold E. Carlson officiating. Marion Lodge, No 6 AF & AM will be in charge. There will be a Knight Templar escort. Burial will be in Oak Shade cemetery.
