Marshall Swayne, A Pioneer Farmer, Died Wednesday Morning
Marshall Swayne, retired farmer, died at his home, 1435 Tenth street, Marion, Wednesday morning at 2:30 o'clock, following a long illness.
Mr. Swayne was born January 24, 1863, at London Grove, Pa., the son of David C. and Emmaline Walton Swayne. He came west to Iowa as a very young man in 1879, settling on a farm near Sac City, and seven years later moved to a farm near Marion. He was married in Marion in 1887 to Miss Emma Cook, who died here in October 1930. He was again married March 29, 1932 to Mary Woodward, who survives. There are no surviving children, but a sister, Mrs. Anna Pyle, resides at Malvern, Pa., and a brother, Isaac Swayne, resides at West Grove, Pa.
Mr. Swayne retired from the farm in 1932, and came to the home on North Tenth street. He was a fine type of a man whose word was as good as his bond. He had a keen sense of humor and loved his quite joke. He was a member of the Quaker faith, and though a friend, supporter and more or less regular attendant at local church through all the passing years, he retained his membership in the Quaker church at London Grove, back in the state of William Penn, never failing to contribute to its financial support.
Mr. Swayne was also a faithful member of the Odd Fellows, belonging to Osceola lodge, No. 18, the Centennial encampment, No. 91, the Marion Canton, No. 7, Patriarchs Militant, and to Grove City Rebekah lodge, No. 35.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. from the Yocom chapel, with the Rev. Vernon H. Carter, pastor of the Christian church, officiating. Burial will be made in Oak Shade cemetery, the Odd Fellows burial service to be used at the grave.
