JOHN McGILVARY:--Monday morning, at 8:10 o'clock, at the home of his friends, Mrs. Charles F. Cooper, 219 Second avenue, west, occurred the death of John McGilvary, aged 78 years, following a lingering illness. The funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the residence of Mr. Cooper. Rev. Frank Ward will officiate and interment will be made in Oak Shade cemetery, Marion. Mr. McGilvary was born on the Isle of Mull, Scotland, February 2, 1838[sic], and moved with his parent to this country in 1848. They settled in Canada, and when Mr. McGilvary was 23 years old he came to Iowa. He settled in Marion two years later, and that city and Cedar Rapids have since been his home. He was best known by the ??? of the race track of the early days of Cedar Rapids. He was a favorite when the race course was situated on the present site of the new M.E. church. He was united in marriage to Miss Frances Hutchinson, of Marion, and to them were born two children, all of whom have preceded him in death.
