The Marion Sentinel Thursday Feb. 12, 1931
The stroke suffered by Mrs. Mollie Wood, age 79, 519 Ninth st., last Sunday proved fatal, Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock. She never regained consciousness.
Mrs. Wood was found by Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Smith Sunday at 8:30 a.m. in her home, when efforts to arouse her by phone failed. When they came to the house they found Mrs. Wood unconscious and Mrs. Mary Burke, age 97, Marion's oldest woman, mother of Mrs. Wood, on the floor with a cut on the back of her head, which she suffered when she attempted to get up from bed, to which she has been confined because of a broken hip, in order to help her daughter. Mrs. Burke is suffering a severe cold which came as a result of exposure to which she was subjected while helpless in the house.
Mrs. Wood was born Dec. 17, 1951, at St. Joe, Mich. She was married to George Wood in Marion June 18, 1879. Mr. Wood was a second lieutenant in the Twentieth Iowa Infantry and was killed at Las Vegas, N.M., in 1897. All of Mrs. Wood's married life was spent in traveling with her husband who transferred to numerous places in the United States.
She was a member of the Presbyterian church and of Robert Mitchell Relief Corps, taking active part in church activities thoughout her life. She was a talented singer and even after she was well along in years took part in the Old Settler's meetings together with her mother.
For years she has been living with her mother, caring for her, and especially during the time when Mrs. Burke had been confined to her bed because of the broken hip has she been a comforting aid. She has numerous friends who mourn her death.
Surviving besides her mother are the following relatives: A sister, Mrs. George Oakley of Chicago; two nieces, Mrs. Ellen Falner? of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Mary Hanson of San Francisco, and Harry Burke of Seattle.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Yocom Funeral chapel, with the Rev. W.E. Fisher officiating. Interment will be made in Oak Shade.
