Anthony Joseph Reiter was born in Bavaria, Germany, January 15, 1836. Here his childhood and young manhood were spent and here he received his education which was of a high order.
At the age of 21 he emigrated to America and located in Bureau county, Ill. He was married to Miss Phylura Tinkham, May 22, 1862. Five years later he moved his family to Buchanan county, Iowa, where he continued to reside until 1874, when the family home was moved to Marion. He followed the occupation of farming but after coming to this city he has been janitor of public buildings, serving faithfully and well in this capacity for more than forty years. For many years he has been a faithful member of the Christian church.
His death occurred while he was on a visit to his son Albert at Henry, S.D., being in his eighty-third year. He was preceded in death by his wife, who passed away March 10, 1903. Eight children were born to them, all of whom are living except Willie E., who passed away in infancy.
His children are: Albert E., of Henry S.D., Mrs. Carrie S. Rasley of Norfolk, Neb., Horace E., Clarence E., Florence M., Leroy P., and Ernest A., of Marion.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the residence with the Rev. Mandus Barrett of the Congregational church in charge. Burial was in Oak Shade cemetery.
