The Marion Register Wednesday September 11, 1895
The funeral service of Mr. George Miles, who died Friday evening, Aug. 30th, 1895, was held at Wesley Chapel Sunday morning, conducted by Rev. Walter Piper, who, for the occasion took for his text Psa. 73: 24. The church was crowded to overflowing, many not able to get inside. The pulpit and alter of the church was beautifully decorated with flowers.
Mr. Miles was born near Perryville, Ohio, July 9th, 1823, making his age 72 years, 1 month, 23 days. He was married to Lillian Mary Blackburn, April 27th, 1848. God blessed this union of 47 years with 8 children, 4 sons and 4 daughters, the youngest son, George Hamilton, preceding his father to the spirit world 8 years ago.
Mr. Miles moved to Iowa and in the vicinity of Marion in 1854. He knew something of the hardships and struggles of pioneer life. He saw, and assisted in the transforming of the wild prairies of Linn county into the beautiful and fertile farms of the present. Here he settled and acquired a lovely little home, developed an honest and sturdy manhood, raised his family, and proved himself a citizen of no mean worth. As an old settler he was honored and respected by all. Mr. Miles was also a christian man. His chief aim was to lay up treasures in heaven. He was converted in the Greentown church of Ashland, Ohio, at the age of 24 and united with the Baptist church, remaining a member until moving to Iowa when his membership was transferred to the 1st Baptist church of Marion where he remained a member until the Master called him from the church below to the church above, from labor to reward. He leaves a wife, bowed down with grief, 3 sons and 4 daughters to mourn their loss. Earth is made poorer and heaven richer.
The pall bearers were chosen from among the old settlers. The following are the names: Mr. Huntoon, Mr. Goodlove, Mr. Robinson, Mr. Leidigh, Mr. Mathes and W.H. McClain.
