Obituary of John P. Snider
John P. Snider was born in Addington county, Ontario, Canada, April 8, 1841, and died May 31, 1916, aged seventy-five years, one month and twenty-three days.
He was raised on a farm and later went to New York state, there obtained his education, and engaged in the mercantile business two years; was married to Jureshia Burton at Fairmount, N.Y., in the year 1872. He then wen in the Thousand Islands, summer resort, and was manager there for several years. Here he lost his wife in 1890, then came to Chicago where he was in business until 1904.
He was married to Miss May L. Field in Oxford Mills, Iowa, May 6, 1895; moved to Oxford Mills in 1904 and lived there until three years ago when he came to Marion, where he has lived until his death.
To this union were born two children, J.P., Jr. and Lydia May, who with his wife mourn his sudden death.
He was a faithful and loving husband and father, always trying to accomplish something for their pleasure and welfare; his kindly disposition, combined with fair dealing and good business qualities caused him to be respected and loved by a wide circle of friends. He was a Christian man and at the time of death was a member of the Methodist church in Marion.
Death came upon him suddenly due to an accident but he met death with the utmost bravery and made every provision for the future welfare of his family. He died saying, "God's will be done."
The funeral services were held from the late residence on Fourteenth street and were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Dr. Northrup, assisted by Rev. Dr. Ensign of the Presbyterian church of Marion. Music was furnished by a quartet and the burial was in Oak Shade cemetery.
