From the Marion Pilot, Thursday December 13, 1894
Dyer Uusher[sic], one of the earliest settlers and best known citizens of Linn County, died at 1:45 Tuesday morning at his home five miles west of Cedar Rapids. He has lived in Linn county since 1838, coming here before a single farm had been opened, and when there were not half a dozen cabins in the county. He came of a sturdy family and was born in Ohio, was 80 years, 8 months and 13 days old. When eighteen yearr[sic] old, before Iowa was even a separate territory, he crossed the Mississippi in 1832, being one of the first white Americans to come upon Iowa prairies. Mr. Usher has always been a prominent figure in Linn county, and until a couple of years ago was mentally in his full vigor, and physically was very strong and rugged. He always attended the old settlers' meetings and was always ready with his reminiscences of the early day. On all subjects connected with the early affairs of the county and state he was very familiar and was considered excellent authority upon the half forgotten events that transpired when all Iowa was prairie.--Gazette.
