AN OBITUARY
Brief Sketch of the Life of Late S.B. Scott
Sherman Bently Scott, son of James and Ellen Scott, was born at Mt. Vernon, Ohio, April 3, 1861 and died at noon Jan. 29, 1924, at his home in Marion, Iowa. In 1872 the family came to Linn county and purchased what is known as the old Lucore farm three miles northeast of Marion. In 1875 he was converted at the Congregational church under the pastorate of Rev. Waterman. On Jan. 1, 1895, he was united in marriage to Sarah J. Austin at her father's home near Prairie Chapel, having a double wedding service with her sister, Ina, and Frank J. Dye. Rev. Walter Piper, minister of the M.E. Prairie Chapel church officiating. This was the church with Mr. Scott attended during the early years of his manhood. To this happy union were born three children, Fern, Julalia and Bently.
In 1898 Mr. Scott left the farm and coming to Marion purchased the home in which he remained up to his death. He had a wide acquaintance over Linn county, having served as deputy sheriff under A.W. Coquillette for five years, John Taylor for six years and Thomas Avery for one year. Ill health caused him to retire. Previous to his work as deputy sheriff he was marshal of the city of Marion for many years.
Mr. Scott's sickness began three years ago, but he was still permitted to go to his office until Sept. 21, 1921, when he was compelled to five up his active work.
He is survived by his wife, and two daughters, Mrs. J.W. Stoddard of Cedar Rapids, Ia., Miss Julalia and a son, Bently, both living at home and a grandson, Joseph Scott Stoddar, and two brothers, Charles of Orange, California, and Walter of Marion, Ia. who was with him when the end came.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Harry Glenn Finney, assisted by Rev. Walter Piper, at the Presbyterian church at 2:30 p.m., Jan. 31, 1924.
Pallbearers were Gerald Senninger, Frank Williams, Dr. L.C. Dow, Guy Linville, J.W. Bowman and R.N. Fitzgerald, the latter two being at his bedside at the time of his death.
He was laid to rest beside his parents in Oak Shade cemetery, Marion, Iowa.
Out of town friends at the funeral included C.D. Withers, Atkinson, Nebr., Mrs. Ollie Clark, Ottumwa; Mrs. Joanna Wightman and Mrs. Carl Wightman, Perry; Mr. and Mrs. A.R. Jordan, Central City; Mr. and Mrs. Sam Austin, Rev. and Mrs. Walter Pip, Kenwood Park; E.M. Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Stoddard, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Hillerege, all of Cedar Rapids; Ina Dye Minor, Magrath, Canada, H.A. Stearns, W.C. Boyd, G.E. Johnson and Mrs. Elizabeth Rose, all of Cedar Rapids.
