John L. Allen was born in Warren county, New York, January 16, 1819 and died in Marion, Iowa, Dec. 10, 1905, aged 86 years 10 months and 24 days. He was married To Lucinda Stevens at Ticondagoga, N.Y., February 16, 1845. He moved to Mount Caroll, Ill, in 1851, and was there 11 years; thence to Prairieburg, Iowa, in 1862, where he remained 5 years; came to Marion in 1867, where he has lived ever since, or for more than 38 years. One child was born into his home, Mrs. Allen, who with her two daughters, survive him, his wife having passed over but a few months ago.
Brother Allen has been a converted man since 1840, when he joined the M.E. church, and has remained a most devoted Christian ever since. There is not the shadow of a doubt but what this good man has gone straight home to heaven. He loved all things that pertained to the godly life, the Bible, the church, the ministry, prayer, and song. No body could talk with him longer than a few moments without finding out he was a good man, full of Holy Spirit and of faith. He dies having outlived all the acquaintances of the earlier days anywhere near his own age, but was universally respected by all who knew him.
The funeral services were held at the residence yesterday afternoon being conducted by Rev. T.M. Evans.
