Last Rites for William Elliott Held Sunday
Wealthy Manufacturer from Boston; Buried in Marion
Funeral services for William E. Elliott, 64, son of Milton L. and Susie Lake Elliott, were held Sunday, March 1, at 2:30 p.m. in the Yocom chapel. The Rev. James Alcock, pastor of the Congregational church, officiated. Marion Lodge No. 6, A.F. and A.M., was in charge of the services.
Mr. Elliott died Wednesday, Feb'y 25th in Lynn, Mass. He had been in failing health for about two years. For many years his home was in Boston, where he was head of a large shoe machine industry, producing the Elliott button fastener, the invention of which brought him a large fortune. He was born in Marion and here his boyhood and early manhood was spent. It had been his plan to return to Marion to spend his last years. He was a charter member of the Mentzer Hose team, members of which were pallbearers. He was past grand commander of the Knight Templar lodge in Michigan, and a 3 degree Mason. Knights Templar formed his burial escort. He was prominent in Marion until he moved to Grand Rapids, where he established the Elliott Manufacturing company, later moving the industry to Boston.
He was married to Miss Minnie Steen, also a member of a prominent Marion family, by the Rev. W.W. Gist, in the Congregational church. Mr. Elliott retained here, his mother's home, which he built for her, in Eighth avenue and Seventeenth street.
Marion relatives of Mr. Elliott include his aunts, Mrs. R. Lee Taylor and Mrs. Barbara Lake; a niece, Miss Irma Steen, and seven cousins, Mrs. C.N. Owen, Mrs. John Oliver, Ware Lake, Walter Lake, Glen Lake, Will Dye, Geo. Dye and T.J. Davis.
Out-of-town relatives attending the funeral were: Mrs. Norma Romes of Chicago, H.A. Steen and son, Harold H., of Kerkhaven, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Herbert L. Steen and Miss Laura Steen of Delmar; Frank C. Steen, Boston, Fred E. Steen, Philadelphia; Mrs. and Mrs. J.B. Howeel, Washington, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Ben Like, Manly, and Mr. and Mrs. Elliott Davis of Cedar Rapids.
