Dr. J.W. LaGrange, a practicing physician in Marion for forty years, known and loved by every resident of the city, died at Daytona Beach, Fla., Sunday as the result of a stroke of apoplexy. The body, accompanied by Mrs. LaGrange, will arrive in Marion tomorrow and the funeral will be held in the afternoon, the services, to be in charge of the Masons of which the deceased was an honored member, and in compliance with a wish expressed before his death.
The death, which came as a shock to the people of Marion, came as a great surprise. Leaving Marion, a little more than a year ago to make his home in New York state Dr. and Mrs. LaGrange had gone to Florida to spend the winter. He had been in excellent health and the day he suffered the stroke he had been at play and seemed to take great enjoyment. Stricken while on his way to the house he lapsed into unconsciousness quickly and death came in a short time.
Dr. LaGrange was born in Indiana April 29, 1849. He was graduated from Rush Medical college, Chicago, after which he came to Marion. He was married to Miss Carrie Alexander, and to them were born four children, two of whom survive, Wesley LaGrange of Long Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Carolyn Brooks of New York city. Mrs. LaGrange died many years ago.
Dr. LaGrange was married to Mrs. Maggie Blakesly, who also died. To them was born one son, William LaGrange, now an instructor in the State College at Ames. Three years ago, Dr. LaGrange was married to Mrs. Jessie Markham at Herkimer, N.Y.
In addition to his wife, and three children, Dr. LaGrange is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Lou Williams, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Kate Smock, Vinton, and Mrs. Hattie Sterling, Long Beach, Calif., and one brother, Tunis, of Vinton.
