The Marion Sentinel Thursday November 3, 1898
Death of Mrs. Louise Crane.
The funeral of the late Mrs. Louise Crane was held in the Christian church on Thursday of last week and was well attended by friends of the family of this city and Cedar Rapids. The Therestrial club, of which the deceased was a member, attended in a body. Eld. N.A. McConnell preached the sermon and read the following sketch. He was assisted by Rev. J.B. Gonzales, pastor of the Congregational church and Rev. F.W. Luce, pastor of the M.E. church:
Mary Louise Smith Crane was born in Springfield, Bradford county, Pa., April 10th, 1854, and came to Iowa in 1864, her girlhood days being spent here. She was married to Mortimer E. Crane in June, 1874, by Rev. N.A. M.Connell. She had one son, Willie M., born Dec. 20th, 1878, and died Feb. 11th, 1879. Her father, Jeremiah Smith, was a volunteer soldier in the Rebellion and died while in the service near Falmonth, Va., Jan. 8th, 1863.
Louise from early childhood had strong convictions of her duty and desired to be a christian, but did not unite with any church until about 1882. She was immersed by Rev. Waterman at the Christian church and joined the Congregational church and has been a consistent member ever since.
Disease fastened itself upon her about eighteen months ago and she has born it with great heroism and fortitude. Her desire to live was strong, yet perfectly reconciled to go if she could not get well. She was a very loving, dutiful daughter and sister. Her friends in Marion, Cedar Rapids and other places where she has been are legion as you who have known can bear testimony.
