The Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette Monday May 6, 1912 Marion News
Obituary of Mrs. M.E. Wood
Mary E. Landon was born in Canton, Pa., in 1833 and died May 2, 1912, at her home in Marion, Iowa, lacking only a few days of being seventy-nine years old. She had been ill several weeks, pneumonia being the direct cause of her death. She was married to J.H. Smith, a brother of Mrs. J.K. Gibson of this city, and to this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Louise Crane, who passed away several years ago. Mr. Smith died during the civil war, so in 1864 the wife came to Marion and has resided here since. Later the deceased was married to Stillman Woods[sic], who died a number of years ago. To this union was born one son, Edwin, of New Orleans, who survives.
For many years Mrs. Woods was afflicted with deafness but in spite of this she was always cheerful and patient. During her last illness, when it was necessary to sit up and care for her at night, she was very grateful to the friends who so kindly cared for her and those who ministered unto her felt they had received a blessing in seeing her patient, trusting faith in her Lord. She had placed in the back of her testament a beautiful prayer, clipped from some paper, and often when restless would ask that it be read to her and the words seemed to always quiet and soothe her. She was one of the oldest members of the Christian church and as long as she was able was ready to do her share in the church's work.
The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock conducted by Rev. L.M. Starr of the Christian church.
