OBITUARY OF SAMUEL STARRY
-------------------------
Well Known Resident of Marion Who Passed Away October 30.
Samuel E. Starry was born in Jones county, Iowa, March 7, 1852. Soon after his parents removed to the old farm home near Springville, where his boyhood days were spent. He was educated in the public schools of Springville, Cornell college, and Balies business college of Dubuque. July 3, 1873, he was united in marriage to Alice G. McShane. One child, a beautiful little daughter, blessed this union, filling the home with sunshine for seven short, sweet years and then the Silent Reaper gathered the fair blossom for the garden above. In 1884 he entered the law office of J.P. Ferguson of Clarence, Iowa, where he remained two years. October 6, 1886, he was admitted to the bar and followed his chosen profesion[sic] for a number of years. He then engaged in the banking business until shattered health compelled him to abandon all work and take a much needed rest. More than twenty years ago he gave his heart to God and the earnest Christian life of the years that followed sheds its light through the gloom and cheers with the thought that our loved one is safe in "the beautiful city whose builder and maker is God." His sunny disposition and noble upright character won for him a warm place in the hearts of all who knew him. But it was in the home life as husband and father that he was best known and loved. His life was cast upon a generous mould. His love and sympathy were as wide as humanity. He was a fearless lover of truth and justice and always followed his convictions of right.
During his illness he spoke often with the dear ones caring for him of God's love and goodness, and at each sunset would say, "God is so good. We have had one more beautiful day together. When I am better we will do more for God and His sacred cause." But his work on earth was finished Sunday morning, Oct. 30. The "pearly gates" swung wide and he passed to the heavenly home to meet again the idolized child who had preceded him, and for whom he had always mourned.
A large circle of loving friends sympathize with the wife in her sad bereavement. Funeral services were held at the home in Marion, Nov. 3, conducted by Rev. T.M. Evans, pastor of the M.E. church. Interment at Oak Shade cemetery./
